How can you write a thank-you note to increase your chances of getting a job offer after a bad interview?

Microsoft layoff warning

"Tell me about yourself." This is the first hurdle of any interview. Many engineers fail here by either reciting their resume line-by-line or diving too deep into irrelevant technical weeds.

The Winning Formula: Present + Past + Future

1. Present: Define Your Identity Summarize your core professional background and your "superpower" in one sentence.

  • Example: "I am a Full-stack Engineer with 5 years of experience specializing in high-concurrency distributed systems, currently maintaining the core trading engine at [Company Name]."

2. Past: Showcase Technical Impact (The Hooks) Don’t list every project. Pick 1-2 "hero moments" that prove your value. Always use data.

  • Example: "In my previous role, I led the migration to an AWS microservices architecture. By optimizing DB queries and implementing Redis caching, I reduced system latency by 30% and saved the company $50k in annual infrastructure costs."

3. Future: Why This Role? Align your career trajectory with the company’s specific mission.

  • Example: "I’ve been following [Company Name]’s innovations in AI-native applications. I’m excited to bring my backend architecture expertise to the team to help solve [Specific Technical Challenge]."

💡 Pro-Tips for Engineers:

  • Set the Hook: When describing achievements, mention a specific technical challenge (e.g., a tricky race condition you solved). This guides the interviewer to ask questions in your "comfort zone" next.

  • Time Box It: Keep it between 90-120 seconds. It’s an appetizer, not the main course.
